Screening Anti-Car Films and Changing Lanes at Interference Archive
Interference Archive hosts an in-person screening of four activist documentary films on Sunday, November 8, 2026, exploring how grassroots social movements have organized against the dangers, policing, and commodification of urban transit systems to reclaim public space from automobiles.
The pre-show screening begins at 6:00 p.m. with Still We Ride (dir. Andrew Lynn, Elizabeth Press, and Christopher Ryan, 2005, 37 min.), which chronicles the August 27, 2004, Critical Mass bicycle ride in New York City ahead of the Republican National Convention, when the New York Police Department arrested 264 participants in one of the largest mass arrests in city history.
The main program begins at 6:45 p.m. and features three films:
- The Wreck of the New York Subway (dir. Newsreel, 1969, 16 min.), documenting winter 1969 rider revolts and widespread turnstile-jumping after the New York Transit Authority increased subway fares from twenty cents to thirty cents.
- Marathon de triporteurs (dir. Italo, 2026, 12 min., Spanish with English subtitles), capturing cargo tricycle couriers racing through Lima, Peru, on International Workers’ Day in 1975, shortly before General Juan Velasco Alvarado was overthrown by Francisco Morales Bermúdez.
- Changing Lanes (dir. Ben Wolf, 2025, 74 min.), which investigates the community campaign in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, following the fatal hit-and-run of public school teacher Matthew Jensen, as neighborhood residents mobilized to redesign the dangerous four-lane McGuinness Boulevard corridor.
A post-screening question-and-answer session will follow with director and cinematographer Ben Wolf alongside the filmmakers of Changing Lanes.
The event addresses the ongoing fight for transit equity, street safety, and public space in the face of vehicular dominance and municipal neglect. While the archive’s calendar lists the program running until 9:00 p.m., the tour schedule for Changing Lanes lists an 8:00 p.m. end time.
Admission is free. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and attendees are asked to register in advance on the Interference Archive website. Interference Archive is an all-volunteer community archive located at 314 Seventh Street in Park Slope, Brooklyn, three blocks from the Fourth Avenue and Ninth Street subway station (F, G, and R trains).
